“I don’t think that happens a lot in jobs.” “I’ve had some superspecial, deep, spiritual conversations with people that I will remember for the rest of my life in nail sessions,” Minerva says, reflecting on clients who’ve grown into friends she spends time with regularly. The process of conceptualizing and creating intricate designs is an experience Minerva describes as meditative. Today, Minerva has added her flair to the fingertips of Ariana Grande, whom she toured with for four years Carmen Electra Selena Gomez and Snoop Dogg. The hobby eventually became a career, and Minerva went on to open a salon in downtown Los Angeles called Nail Swag, which closed in September 2020 because of the pandemic after over four years in business. I'm quite adept at painting my own nails (the only time I get a professional manicure is when I want gel before going on vacation), but these press-on nails have me feeling super lazy about painting my nails because they're so easy to use! And that's OK! Each set costs you less than 10 bucks and rather than fool with a bottle of nail glue that ends up anywhere but the nails, each nail has a peel-off plastic that reveals a super sticky surface you press onto your real nail.
